In this document I am going to explain the codes and conventions of our 'A Certain Romance' music video. This is being compared to the music video for 'When the Light Goes Down', also by Arctic Monkeys.

Regarding mise en scene the settings of my video reflect the Arctic Monkeys video for ‘When the Light Goes Down’ because we have similar lighting and colouring as it’s quite grey and desaturated. The buildings look similar because Sheffield and Doncaster are quite similar. We had lots of long-shots to show the scenery like the Arctic Monkeys video.

We used shots of Lewis sat in front of garage doors similar to the Arctic Monkey’s video because we liked the shot and thought it was typical for the genre. Lewis was dressed in a similar way wearing casual clothes but his were more like street wear as our video was more modern. He also had a moody body language similar to that of characters in Arctic Monkey’s videos. Lots of long shots were used here to draw attention to the shots similar to other videos like ours.

We used lots of shots of characters hanging around looking depressed and bored which we felt was a bit of a theme and matched the colour of the video.

We had quick editing at the start of the video to grab the audience and this is common for indie music videos. We also edited to the beat of the song which is used in music videos a lot and it took lots of time but was worth it.

We used lots of tracking shots like in ‘Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High as we liked how it showed characters walking round and we could use more shots instead of just having people sat around.

We also did shot indoors for variety and this is similar to  ‘Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High’ and meant we could match the mood of this type of indie video using settings like this.

For camera we used lots of neural shots like other indie videos and a mix of mid shots and long shots with some close ups which is common in indie videos that have a story.

The reason we chose to shoot our video in this style is because this type of video is seem as a staple for indie music videos in particular in to 2000’s-2010’s. I feel this is done to make the band seems like they are like the everyday working person and the visual style has a gritty realism look to it like a lot of towns in the north are know to look like in particular with the use of graffiti and run down buildings. The washing out of colour in the videos also adds into the style of what the band are trying to get across by making things seem like they are mundane and dull at times following the routine of their daily life. I feel this is something we have managed to achieve well within our video.
